Reason #10,001 that you need to know history. There are historical references everywhere! My husband had a work conference in Savannah, Georgia, and we were lucky enough to get to stay at a hotel on the riverfront. There’s a lot of history in Savannah…most people know that. But this reference came from a quite unexpected source.
Big container ships come down the river several times a day. It is amazing to see the size and scale of those ships in person. As we were playing cards in the hotel, one of my kids looked out the window and pointed out the name of one of the container ships going by. It was called the T. Roosevelt. I had to take a picture!
Side note: One of the coolest museums we have ever been to is the Georgia State Railroad Museum in Savannah. You can get on a bunch of different trains and go through passenger cars from different eras. They even have a working railway turntable! I freaked out when I saw this Sherman necktie from the Civil War.

Be on the lookout for historical references in random places and even in kids’ movies! The day I realized that the Princess Bride “Never get involved in a land war in Asia” line could refer to the Vietnam War or even Napoleon’s invasion of Russia blew my mind! Did you ever catch that? See below.
Where have you found the most unlikely historical reference? I’d love to hear!
