Michelangelo Reference in Despicable Me 3

Last weekend my family and I were watching Despicable Me 3 when what do my ears hear? A reference to the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel! I had just finished covering Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel ceiling a couple weeks ago.

History is everywhere! I tell my students this on a regular basis. Oftentimes it’s hard to get students to see the importance of studying social studies because they don’t think it’s relevant now. Besides the whole “if you don’t know your history you’re bound to repeat it” philosophical argument, there are many references to historical people, places, and events in movies. There’s even some references in kids’ movies that fly right over their heads.

And so I will be sharing this clip with my students to remind them that you never know what kind of historical nuggets you’re going to find when watching a movie.

The reference happens at about 1:40 in the video. Check it out here (the permissions on the video won’t let me embed it).
